LEDIG STILLING VED NIVA

Postdoctoral researcher - ecotoxicology

Deadline: 14.04.2024

Norwegian Institute for Water Research

The Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) is a leading authority in the field of water and environmental research in Norway. We specialize in ecosystems both in freshwater and marine environments, spanning from mountains, through lakes and rivers, to fjords, coastlines, and oceans. We generate science-based knowledge and solutions to address challenges related to the interactions between water and climate, environment, nature, people, resources, and society.

NIVA recognizes the value of diversity, as different perspectives foster creativity, insight, and improved decision-making processes. Our work environment is characterized by respect and equality, and we treat all employees with the same dignity.

NIVA’s Section for Ecotoxicology and Risk Assessment covers all aspects of environmental hazards and risks of chemicals in the aquatic environment. We are continuously developing new biological effects assessments, to better assess the effects of chemical substances in both freshwater and marine environments. Biological effects assessments, using an integrative suite of biomarker responses, are important tools to provide additional endpoints to provide reasons for adverse effects of chemicals and will be the focus of this postdoctoral position. The position is part of the Horizon Europe funded project CONTRAST.

We are now seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral to join our section. The postdoctoral positions have a duration of 3 years.

Work assignments

The postdoctoral will develop and optimize biomarkers for elucidating the modes of action and effects of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) to marine species, as well as analysing the resulting data, for application into an integrated effect-based monitoring of CECs in European marine environment. In addition, the postdoctoral will bring valuable expertise to the section that is currently lacking, this includes biological effects endpoints related to –omics, immunotoxicity, cardiotoxicity, endocrine disruption, etc.

The successful candidate will:

  • Develop and optimize biomarkers to assess the effects and understand the modes of action (MoA) of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) on marine organisms. Plan case studies in proposed coastal marine areas as part of the project. Conduct controlled laboratory exposures of CECs to marine organisms, including exposure to chemical mixtures
  • Design and execute in vivo and in vitro bioassays using marine species
  • Perform Effect Directed Analysis (EDA) of marine sediments
  • Utilize state-of-the-art automated analysis systems both in the laboratory and during fieldwork
  • Design and carry out large-scale exposure experiments, such as flow-through systems
  • Disseminate project outputs and activities
  • Publish project results in high-quality scientific journals

Qualifications

  • PhD in Ecotoxicology or related field
  • Previous postdoc experience in a relevant area is desirable
  • Expertise in analyzing biomarkers in aquatic organisms
  • Experience with in vivo and in vitro bioassays involving invertebrates and/or fish
  • Ability to plan and conduct field monitoring campaigns in coastal waters
  • Strong statistical knowledge for data analysis and interpretation
  • Experience designing exposure systems
  • Fluency in English (both oral and written) and effective communication skills for presenting at scientific conferences
  • Valid driving license for Norway
  • FELASA license f is advantageous

Personal characteristics

We are seeking an enthusiastic, goal-oriented candidate with good communication skills, who can demonstrate ability to work in a broad interdisciplinary and international research group and project. You should be able to work in a team of researchers with different backgrounds, but also to propose and develop independent research within the project’s framework

We offer

  • Exciting and stimulating tasks in a leading national water science research institute with great social significance
  • Opportunities for professional and personal development in an organization were responsibility and initiative are highly valued
  • Flexible working hours
  • Great pension and insurance schemes
  • A comprehensive network of national and international researchers
  • A multicultural, social, and creative work environment
  • Access to a gym at the office and to NIVAs cabin in Hemsedal

Information about the process

In our recruitment processes, we utilize Semac background checks. This includes, among other things, document and source verification to confirm the validity of the documentation you have submitted.
