ASSESSING EFFECTS OF DISTURBANCE ON WILDLIFE BEHAVIOUR AND ENERGY EXPENDITURE USING ACCELEROMETRY AND MOVEMENT DATA (3 years)

About the position

A 100% position as a PhD candidate in applied ecology is available at Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Applied Ecology and Agricultural Sciences, Campus Evenstad, from 01.08.2020 until 31.07.2023.

The PhD student will join the LARGE research group at Campus Evenstad, and will be associated with several ongoing research projects that are using a variety of biologging tools to study wildlife movement ecology, species interactions, and responses to climate change and human disturbance. The main objective of the advertised PhD project is to investigate the effects of different types of disturbance on fine-scale behaviour of wolves and moose, and to estimate the energetic cost of the behavioural responses, using accelerometry data in combination with camera GPS collars, temperature and heart rate loggers.

The PhD student is expected to assist in advising MSc, BSc and practice students, and to be an active member of the research group.

The candidate will be supervised by associate professor Ane Eriksen at Campus Evenstad. Co-advisors will be professor Barbara Zimmermann, associate professor Alina Evans (Campus Evenstad) and associate professor Olivier Devineau (Campus Evenstad).

Qualifications

A master’s degree in ecology or equivalent education, with the grade A or B is required to be qualified for admission to the PhD program. The candidate will work with large datasets requiring very good skills in data handling and statistical analyses. Candidates with previous experience in wildlife ecology, GIS and R statistical software may be prioritized.

Previous experience from relevant fieldwork and peer-reviewed publications are considered as important merits. We expect the candidate to be passionate about doing research, and to be willing to develop the skills to communicate this passion with other scientists and the general public. The candidate should welcome the opportunity to conduct research abroad and work within a multidisciplinary team. We are searching for a reliable candidate who can work independently, but who will also function well in our large team. We emphasize personal qualifications when appointing personnel to the faculty.
