About the position

University of South-Eastern Norway has about 18 000 students and about 1500 employees. The university is organized in four faculties, with instruction and R&D activities on eight campuses. The main profile of the university is to provide socially relevant education,

geared towards specific professions, and adapted to the requirements of the workplace, as well as to produce applied research and development.

The Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences has a vacancy for a full-time permanent position as a Professor within microsystems for early detection of diseases. For the first three years, this Professorship is sponsored through a donation from Sparebank 1 Stiftelsen BV.

The position is based in the Department of Microsystems, and reports directly to the head of department. The main place of work is located in the Research Park, USN, Campus Vestfold, Horten, Norway. This location provides new offices and cutting edge laboratory facilities funded partly by national infrastructure grants. The Horten area, where the campus is located, is in the heart of a dynamic region of the Norwegian coast and within driving distance to Oslo. Department of Microsystems is collaborating closely with the regional industry cluster Electronic Coast having world-leading companies within microsensors and ultrasound imaging.

Responsibilities and duties

The candidate is expected to be a professional initiative-taker within the University's research area micro technologies for improved public health and contribute to the development of national and international networks. As a Professor at the University of South-Eastern Norway, you will be assigned responsibility for research, research management and supervision in strategic areas within the University’s network of researchers. The background for this new position is a strong need for medical systems that can make earlier detection of non-communicating diseases (NCDa), in particular cancer and/or cardiovascular diseases. These diseases are responsible for about 70 % of all deaths worldwide. Focusing on detecting symptomatic patients as early as possible is key to preventing early death and the development of such systems has the potential to save many lives in the future. Today, there is a high an untapped potential for developing such systems based upon advanced sensors and imaging technologies.

The successful applicant is expected to be actively engaged in micro technologies and/or biomedical technologies for early detection of NCDs.

Of specific interest are one of the two research areas:

  • Medical diagnostic ultrasound systems, in particular ultrasound transducers
  • Bio-MEMS for liquid biopsy and detection of biomarkers

The position will be part of the University's highly productive research area microsystems and nanotechnologies which include 12 professors, 6 associate professors and more than 30 PhD candidates. Initiation and financing of research projects is part of the professor's duties. You may be required to carry out teaching at all levels of the educational cycle within your department, and at other departments.

Qualifications

For employment as a Professor, a scientific level is required in accordance with established international or national standards. It is required that applicants hold a doctorate degree (PhD) or similar competence level and can document sufficient scientific production, leadership and participation in research projects within relevant fields. Scientific expertise of high quality shall show both depth and breadth. Production shall reflect an independent research profile and show ability to take up new issues. Quality, originality and innovation skills will be emphasized in front of total production.

To a large extent, the staff at the faculty work in project teams, and therefore, the candidate must be motivated to share his or her knowledge and cooperate. Personal suitability for the position will be emphasized.

The successful applicant should have a broad and solid background, and must be able to document research expertise within at least one of the following active research areas for the department:

  • Microsystem technology for biomedical applications, preferably detection of biomarkers and liquid biopsy technologies
  • Medical ultrasound technology, in particular ultrasonic transducer technology

English language skills should be proficient user level C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Language (CEFR), but it is also expected that the successful applicant either master, or will commit to obtain, sufficient language skills to be able to communicate in one of the Scandinavian languages (Norwegian, Swedish or Danish).

If there are no applicants qualified for permanent employment as a professor, an applicant may be hired for a temporary period up to three years if the expert committee finds that the applicant has the prerequisites required to obtain the necessary qualifications within that period of time. A new expert assessment will be conducted within the expiry of this period.

Applicants must also document educational competence in line with the guidelines in the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts.

Educational competence and quality development

Educational competence

Teaching at the university shall be based on research, in terms of both teaching practice and content. As such, we aim to recruit teachers who have experience from and demonstrate the motivation to focus on the development of teaching practice and the interaction between teaching and research, in order to promote learning.

In accordance with the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts, the University of South-Eastern Norway has established requirements that applicants for the posts of Professor must be able to document skills in university and university college level pedagogy, subject didactics and digital competencies.

On this basis, it is assumed that applicants can document educational skills through successfully completed university-level educational programs of study or equivalent courses with a minimum of 200 hours of work and that they have developed fundamental skills in planning, evaluation and development of teaching and supervision at a university or university college level.

Alternatively, documentation is required to demonstrate educational skills through a combination of relevant courses and practical teaching that are deemed to be equivalent to a program of study with a minimum of 200 hours of study.

Educational quality development

It is assumed that applicants for posts as Professor at the University, when presenting an educational portfolio or folder, can document the following:

  • Development in the quality of their own teaching over time
  • Extensive experience of supervision, preferably at Master's and PhD level
  • Participation in development of educational quality within the scholarly community

Applicants who are unable to document educational competence in line with the University’s criteria may be appointed on the condition that they qualify within two (2) years. Courses in university and university college level pedagogy will be offered.

Salary

Professor (code 1013): NOK 667,200 – 934,800 per year (LT 72 – 85).

Salary grade according to seniority and competence. A higher salary may be considered in special circumstances.

The statutory amount for the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted from the salary.

The person appointed must comply with the laws, regulations and agreements that apply at any given time to the post.

The appointing body is the appointments committee for teaching and research posts at the University of South-Eastern Norway. An expert committee will assess the applications. Based on the committee’s recommendations, relevant applicants will be invited to an interview and a trial lecture.
