Applications are invited for a 3-4 year PhD-research Fellowship as PhD Candidate in Experimental cardiology to be based at the Department for Molecular Medicine (Physiology), University of Oslo (UiO).

The Research fellowship is funded by UiO and will be linked to the “HeartTarget”-project, where the overall aim is to obtain system based understanding of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), and use this knowledge to develop targeted therapies for this disease. Overall, the project will combine state-of-the art animal models of heart disease with multi-omics approaches such as transcriptomics, epigenomics and proteomics, in combination with machine learning assisted bioinformatics analyses, and eventually test novel therapies deduced from these analyses in HFpEF models. The Research Fellow hired will do a combination of preclinical work in HFpEF-models, obtain multi-omics datasets and early bioinformatics analyses in close collaboration with other members of the group, and in active collaboration with leading scientists at national and international level. Parts of the PhD thesis will be focused on method optimizations necessary for the project especially in preclinical models. Short research stays in collaborating labs is a possibility for the hired Research Fellow.

More about the position

The fellowship period is up to 4 years, with 3 years devoted to research education. The position entails a compulsory work load of 25% that consists of teaching and supervision duties and research assistance. The fellowship period is devoted to carrying out a project entitled HeartTarget: Defining targeted treatment options for heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF).

The research fellow must take part in the Faculty’s approved PhD program and is expected to complete the project within the set fellowship period. The main purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

The applicant must, in collaboration with her/his supervisor, within 3 months after employment, have worked out a complete project description to be attached to the application for admission to the doctoral program. Qualification requirements

• A Master’s degree (120 ECTS) or an equivalent qualification in life sciences, bioinformatics or similar, minimum grade B (ECTS grading scale) or equivalent. The Master’s degree must include a thesis of at least 30 ECTS.
• Fluent oral and written communication skills in English
• Possibility to perform preclinical work at independent level required in the HeartTarget project, including FELASA approval or comparable qualifications
• Ability to perform bioinformatics analyses in the HeartTarget project
• Ability to perform bioinformatics analyses in the HeartTarget project, such as whole genome transcriptomics data (uising Python or similar).

In addition, the following qualifications will be considered positively:

• Competence in preclinical cardiology, including standard phenotyping (such as cardiac imaging and hemodynamic evaluation), surgical procedures, biopsies and blood sampling.
• Experience with method optimization relevant to the HeartTarget project
• Programming and handling of big data relevant to the HeartTarget project.
• Experience with work with machine learning will be considered positively
• Fluent oral and written communication in a Scandinavian language
