The position

The Faculty of Engineering Sience and Technology, The Department of building, energy and material technology has a vacant PhD position for applicants who wish to obtain the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). The position is attached to the research group Building, energy and material technology (BEaM), and the Circulus research project.

The appointment is for a period of three years.

The PhD position is for a fixed term, with the objective of completion of research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to a PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position.

The PhD candidate shall participate in the faculty’s organized research training, and the PhD project shall be completed during the period of employment. The postion's affiliation

The position will be affiliated with the Department of building, Energy and Material Technology, and the PhD-candidate will be part of the research group within the department. The department is responsible for various study programs related to building technology, as well as to renewable energy, and the number of students is approximately 400. The department organizes most research activities under research groups. The group conducts applied research in interdisciplinary themes of building, energy and material to develop technologies that are energy efficient, environmentally friendly and sustainable. Our research strengths are in construction technologies and renovation of buildings, renewable energy technologies and building materials especially for cold climate and Arctic conditions.

The position’s field of research/research project and other duties

The position is in the field of research within Recycling of Demolition Waste and recycling of Concrete Demolition Waste (CDW)

The PhD will be focused on activities within the Circulus project which is industry oriented, with main objectives oriented to the increase of reuse and recycling level of CDW, particularly concrete waste in the building industry of Northern Norway. PhD activities will consist of (i) basic research targeted on reuse possibilities of sludge from cutting and washing activities in precast concrete plants, (ii) development of efficient solutions for concrete waste upcycling and use of its full potential, and (iii) solving technical obstacles rising from recycling practices implementation predominantly in the concrete production industry.

Strong emphasis is given to material and economy circularity, reduction of CO2 emissions from concrete and cement industry and decrease of the CDW landfilling.

The project may lead to:

  • Introduction of new SCM
  • Description off a basic principle of new alternative SCM reactivity
  • Increased recycling and reuse level of CDW (concrete waste) in Norway

Tasks performed within the proposed PhD position will contribute to both scientific and practical development of sustainable practices in the building industry by material circularity.

The project may lead to new innovative technology, developing assessment methodology or/and design tool for new recycled concrete.

Qualifications

The candidate should have a bachelor's degree in Chemical, Material, Civil, Mechanical or Building Services engineering, and a master's engineering in the field relevant to the theme of the projects. The suitable candidate must have an average grade B or better at masters degree. The successful applicant must fulfil the requirements for admission to the faculty’s PhD programme, cf. In addition, he/she must be able to document proficiency in Scandinavian or English language equivalent to Norwegian Higher Education Entrance Qualification, refer to the website about PhD regulations at UiT.

Assessment

The applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. During the assessment process, emphasis will be attached to the applicant’s potential for research as demonstrated by:

  • Master’s thesis or equivalent
  • any other academic works,
  • and project description (if required)

In addition, consideration may be given to work experience or other activities of significance for the implementation of the PhD study, and to any teaching qualifications. This includes teaching education, teaching experience, experience from popularization and experience/education from other types of dissemination. Information and material to be considered during the assessment must be submitted by the stipulated deadline.

The applicants who are assessed as the best qualified will be called to an interview. The interview shall among other things aim to clarify the applicant’s personal suitability for the position.

Remuneration for the position of PhD Candidate is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1017 (or code 1378) (or both codes depending on qualifications). A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.
