About the position


The Faculty of Biosciences is inviting applications for a 6-year Postdoctoral Fellow Tenure track position or Associate Professor Tenure track position within bioinformatics and statistical genomics. The aim of the employment is to recruit a candidate for a full-time permanent position as associate or full professor within bioinformatics and statistical genomics targeting relevant topics in aqua- and agri- research.

About BI

The Faculty of Biosciences is organized into two departments: Department of Animal and Aquacultural Sciences and Department of Plant Sciences.


The main objective of the Faculty of Biosciences is to contribute to the development of sustainable agriculture and food production systems through basic and applied research on plants and animals including fish (aquaculture). The faculty houses Centre for Integrative Genetics (CIGENE) and the research center for Research-based Innovation (SFI) - Foods of Norway.


The faculty is responsible for bachelor- and master programmes in Biology, Animal Science and Plant Science, and international master programmes in Genome Science, Agroecology, Plant Science, Aquaculture, Animal Breeding Genetics and Feed Manufacturing Technology. PhD programmes include Animal Science and Aquaculture, and Plant Sciences. There are currently 480 bachelor and master students, and 90 PhD students, enrolled in these programmes. The faculty has approximately 220 permanent and temporary scientific employees, including technicians, and 18 administrative positions.

The successful candidate will join the multidisciplinary Genome Biology research group, which possess expertise in genetics, evolutionary and comparative genomics, bioinformatics and systems biology. This group includes 2 full-time professors, 2 associate professors, 22 postdocs/researchers, 11 PhD students and 10 research technicians, teaming up within Centre for Integrative Genetics (CIGENE; www.cigene.no). CIGENE has a strong aqua- and agri- research profile, with key strengths in application of ‘omics’ data to understand the genetic architecture of complex traits. The group has a track-record in high-impact publishing and development of invaluable genomic resources for agricultural and marine species. CIGENE has also established excellent wet lab facilities for automated high-throughput omics, as well as a connected dry-lab with bioinformatics specialists.

Main tasks

  • The successful candidate will play a key role in developing the research portfolio and teaching within bioinformatics and statistical genomics at the Faculty of Biosciences. This includes teaching and developing student courses, applying for external financing, and publishing in peer reviewed journals.
  • The appointed candidate will take part in the Faculty’s teaching and supervision of BSc, MSc and PhD-students and participate in administrative work at the department, faculty and university level.
  • Communicating key results and new methodologies to industry, as well as develop research projects with industry partners will also be a part of the position.

Qualification requirements, desired experiences, knowledge and personal qualities

Required Academic qualifications

  • A PhD degree in bioinformatics, statistical genomics or computational sciences relevant to the described position
  • Proven record of independent research in the areas of computational analysis of biological data, statistical genomics, bioinformatics, or related areas of research, as evidenced by publications and the successful financing of research projects
  • A high level of proficiency in computer programming languages (e.g. R, Python, Java, Perl, C++) and have competence in mathematics and statistics

A successful candidate without formal pedagogical training must complete the NMBU pedagogy course within two years after appointment

Remuneration and information

The position is placed in government pay scale position code 1352 Postdoctoral fellow, salary grade 59- 77 (NOK 523.200 – 741.300) or position code 1011 Associate professor, salary grade 61 – 77 (NOK 542.400 – 741.300) on the Norwegian Government salary scale upon employment depending on qualifications.
