The Center for Research on Extremism (C-REX) is a cross-disciplinary center for the study of the extreme right, hate crime and political violence. The center was established in early 2016 and is a joint collaboration with five of the leading Norwegian institutions and three of the leading international universities on extremism research. The research focuses on both ideological and behavioral aspects right-wing extremism. In particular, C-REX concentrates on the following areas of research: (1) ideology and identity, (2) violence and hate crimes, (3) gender in extremism, (4) parties and movements, and (5) analyses of prevention and intervention. Geographically, the center concentrates on Europe.
Job description
The Center for Research on Extremism (C-REX) seeks to recruit an excellent candidate interested in doing cutting-edge research on contemporary antisemitism. We offer a three-year doctoral fellowship to work on the project “Comparing Histories of Antisemitism in Contemporary Europe” (CHACE).
Combining historical and comparative social science methods, CHACE seeks to describe and compare historical trajectories of antisemitism in post-Cold War Europe and to explain temporal and cross-national variation in its prevalence and intensity. The project is funded by the Research Council of Norway as a collaboration between the Institute for Social Research (ISF) and C-REX. The successful candidate will carry out a comparative historical study of antisemitism since the 1990s, focusing on two of the following European countries: France, the UK, Hungary, Poland, and Ukraine. The candidate will be required to master the languages involved.
The appointment is for a fixed, non-tenured term of 3 years. If the successful candidate’s research interests match, the Department of Political Sciences’ teaching needs, the appointment may be extended to a fixed, non-tenured term of 4 years with a 25% teaching requirement.
Applicants must formulate a project description that lays out a promising research project that can be fulfilled in the course of three years.
Qualification requirements
The successful candidate must have a Master's degree (120 ECTS) or an equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline within the social sciences or humanities. The Master's degree must include a thesis of at least 30 ECTS and training in research methodology. Mastery of the languages involved in the case studies is required. In evaluating applications, academic qualifications and the project outline will be given more weight than other disciplinary and general qualifications. Successful candidates must document top grades and an MA thesis of the highest quality. Personal suitability will also be an important factor. Short-listed applicants may be called in for interview.
Applicants must submit a project description of up to 3000 words outlining the research topic, the research questions, the sources of data to be used, the choice of scientific theory and method, and a realistic schedule that details how the project will be completed within the fellowship period.
