«Grazing in carnivore forests for sustainable production of food, timber and biodiversity»

About the position

A 100% position as a Post-Doc candidate is available at Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Applied Ecology and Agricultural Sciences at Campus Blæstad from 01.11.2020 until 31.01.2023.

The Post-Doc position will be part of an ongoing research project funded by the Norwegian Research Council: «Grazing in carnivore forests for sustainable production of food, timber and biodiversity». The overall aim of the project is to generate knowledge about how Norway’s boreal forests in regions with established carnivore populations can be sustainably utilized for production of livestock and timber, and conservation of pollinators.

The post-doc position is connected to a work package on depredation risk and stress in free-ranging cattle which are released to carnivore-exposed areas during the summer grazing period. By interviewing farmers and veterinarians in south-eastern Norway, we will collect user experience and identify challenges and successes. As carnivore densities have increased during the past decade, the candidate will compare results from similar surveys done in 1999 with the new survey data. The candidate will in addition do an international survey on cattle-carnivore interactions and interview land use managers in different countries about mitigation techniques. The results of this study will be applicable to silvopastoral systems world-wide and are of great importance for sustainable food production in marginal areas.

The candidate will be supervised by Professor Barbara Zimmermann (applied ecology) and Associate Professor Morten Tofastrud (animal science), both associated with Faculty of Applied Ecology, Agricultural Sciences and Biotechnology, and Professor Jo Kleiven (environmental psychology, Inland School of Business and Social Sciences, Lillehammer).

Qualifications

A PhD degree in agriculture, social sciences, ecology or equivalent education is required to be qualified for the post-doc position.

The studies require skills in handling and statistical analyses of data from qualitative and quantitative surveys. Because the surveys of farmers will be in Norwegian language, working knowledge of a Scandinavian language is preferred. However, the scientific articles will be in English.

We expect the candidate to be passionate about doing research, and to be willing to develop the skills to communicate this passion with other scientists and the general public. The candidate should welcome the opportunity to work within a multidisciplinary team. We are searching for a reliable candidate who can work independently, but who will also function well in our large team. We emphasize personal qualifications when appointing personnel to the faculty.
