UNIS is the world's northernmost educational institution, located in Longyearbyen. The disciplines include Arctic Biology, - Geophysics, - Geology and - Technology. All teaching is in English, and about half of the staff and students are from abroad. Faculty position in Arctic Biology at the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) - Professor/Associate Professor in marine biology

General

The department of Arctic Biology seeks candidates for a full-time, permanent position as Professor or Associate Professor in marine biology. Currently the department consists of two professors, four associate professors, eight adjunct professors, six PhD/postdocs and three technical/administrative staff. The department conducts research and education in Arctic marine and terrestrial biology, and currently provides 22 courses on bachelor, master and PhD level. The department focuses on an integrated approach to High Arctic biology, and field studies and field safety are important in research and education. Arctic Biology is a partner in the large research project Nansen Legacy which is the Norwegian Arctic research community’s joint effort to establish a holistic understanding of a changing marine Arctic climate and ecosystem (http://nansenlegacy.org). Description of the vacant position and qualifications

We seek candidates for a permanent position as Professor or Associate Professor in marine biology. The scientific background and research focus of the candidate must comply with at least one of the strategic research areas of the department: Climate change biology, Seasonal ecology, and Spatio-temporal dynamics of species and systems (http://www.unis.no). The candidate must demonstrate evidence of high-quality research and teaching. Knowledge of Norwegian/Nordic educational and research funding system is advantageous. Research and fieldwork experiences from Arctic or high-latitude marine ecosystems are required. Good taxonomical knowledge and/or novel methodology to study lower trophic marine ecosystems are expected.

An integrated approach will be regarded as advantageous. Possibilities and willingness for collaboration with other staff members will thus be emphasized, and the applicant will be evaluated in relation to the research profile and strategic plan of the department. It is important that the appointed person has the ability to work independently and in team and has a positive attitude and flexibility. We seek early career postdocs or candidates with a well-established national and international network. Applicants for the position should send in a ca 2-pages outline of a research plan for a 5-years period. A collaborative agreement with one of the Norwegian universities will be regarded as advantageous. The appointed person will be responsible for several undergraduate and/or post-graduate courses, and is expected to supervise students at master and/or PhD level. The candidate is encouraged to develop teaching at UNIS further in his/her field. The candidate should provide a teaching portfolio or similar, outlining a teaching and learning philosophy, teaching experience, and own development in teaching and learning. Formal pedagogic training is an advantage. The department has a focus on educational quality in a Centre of Excellent Education (SFU, http://www.bioceed.no). Experience from, or motivation to focus on development of teaching practices is advantageous.

Employment conditions for faculty positions at UNIS

At the time sixty per cent of the working time of full-time faculty at UNIS is reserved for research and professional development. In addition, staff is required to be involved in teaching and administration, and to be willing to contribute to the development of UNIS in a more general sense.

Salary

All salaries are set in accordance with the Norwegian government’s university salary scale. Associate Professors are offered a gross salary within the scale of salary step 57 – 77, normally within 59 - 68 (NOK 523 200 – 615 900) in the university salary scale. Professors are offered a gross salary within the scale of salary step 69 – 78 (NOK 627 700 – 765 100) in the university salary scale. In special cases a higher salary step can be considered. The salaries depend on experience/seniority. As resident of Svalbard, an annual allowance of NOK 34 560 (Svalbardtillegg) will be added to staff salaries. A social security contribution of 2 per cent to the Norwegian public service pension fund will be deducted from the salary. Income tax on Svalbard is 8 per cent, plus 8.2 per cent toward national insurance coverage.

A scientific committee will evaluate the applications. Based on the report, an appointment committee will invite the top ranked person(s) for a trial lecture and an interview. The appointment will be made based on the recommendation from the scientific and the appointment committee.
