About the position

A fixed-term 100 % position is available at the University of Agder, Faculty of Humanities and Education, as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in Digital Humanities and Dead Sea Scrolls, affiliated to the Department of Religion, Philosophy and History for a period of three years. The position is located, at present, at Campus Kristiansand. The starting date is 1 August 2020.

The position is linked to the research project The Lying Pen of Scribes: Manuscript Forgeries, Digital Imaging, and Critical Provenance Research (https://lyingpen.uia.no/), funded by a FRIPRO/ToppForsk-grant from the Research Council of Norway and the University of Agder (2019–24). The project is owned by the University of Agder and chaired by Professor Årstein Justnes. The main goal of The Lying Pen project is to produce a comprehensive resource of data, methods, and procedures for the interdisciplinary analysis of Hebrew and Aramaic Dead Sea Scrolls manuscripts and fragments through a combination of physical analyses, digital imaging, machine learning, the study of scribal practices and media, and provenance research.

The Lying Pen project is an interdisciplinary and collaborative project. The successful candidate will be based at UiA in Kristiansand and work with Professors Årstein Justnes and Torleif Elgvin and in close cooperation with other members of the research team based at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (Campus Gjøvik) and MF (Oslo).

Responsibilities

In collaboration with other team members, the successful candidate will be responsible for developing a comprehensive manuscript database that tracks paleographical, material, physical, and visible aspects of Dead Sea Scrolls manuscripts, as well as provenance information. The applicant must also develop a research project on the provenance of the Dead Sea Scrolls, compatible with the Lying Pen of Scribes project.

Required qualifications

  • PhD in Qumran Studies, Biblical Studies, Religious Studies, Archaeology, Digital Humanities, or in another relevant discipline. Potential applicants must have had their theses submitted by the time of the application deadline.
  • Experience with Digital Humanities approaches to manuscript studies
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Intimate knowledge of Hebrew and Aramaic
  • Capacity for excellent independent research and experience in international publishing
  • Experience in and ability to work in a team environment

  • Personal suitability and motivation

Desired qualifications

  • Experience in building complex databases
  • Knowledge of Ancient Greek
  • Knowledge of French and German

The position is remunerated according to the State Salary Scale, salary plan 17.510, code 1352, NOK 552 800 – 573 100 gross salary per year. Higher salary grades may be considered for particularly well-qualified applicants. A compulsory pension contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted from the pay according to current statutory provisions.
